Most crystal singing bowls you’ll see are in the 4th Octave: clear, bright, and resonant. The 3rd Octave bowls are larger and carry a deeper, more grounding tone that you can feel in your body like a soft vibration through the earth. It really comes down to personal preference: some people are drawn to the airy clarity of 4th Octave bowls, while others love the spacious depth of 3rd Octave. Many sound artists (like me!) enjoy weaving them together to create a dynamic range of tones. (Example: listen to our luminous Sea Glass F bowl in the 4th Octave in comparison to the mystical Avalon Mist F bowl in the 3rd Octave: both heart-centered, but with very different personalities.)

The size of your bowl depends on the note. Generally, the bowls are larger starting at the root (C note) and become slightly smaller working their way up toward the crown (B note). 4th Octave bowls: generally 5”–8” 3rd Octave bowls: generally 7”–9” Larger bowls tend to carry deeper tones, while smaller bowls sing at higher pitches, however, don’t be fooled by their size!
